Dew Point vs Relative Humidity: Why the Right Number Wins

"It's 50% humidity" is a statement about temperature as much as moisture — and that is exactly why meteorologists stopped leading with it. Dew point measures the actual water in the air; relative humidity measures how close that water is to capacity. The difference decides how you should read every weather report.

The same air, different RH

Take one air mass — actual moisture fixed — and heat it from 70°F to 90°F: the dew point never changes, but relative humidity falls from ~65% to ~40%. Nothing was removed from the air; the denominator grew. RH is a ratio; dew point is a quantity. Comparing a Phoenix morning to a New Orleans morning by RH compares denominators.

Why the distinction is practical

  1. Running and outdoor effort: pace scales with dew point, not RH — 65°F dew point slows runners regardless of the day's temperature.
  2. Home comfort: AC removes moisture (latent load) separately from heat (sensible load) — a 75°F house at 72°F dew point feels clammy; the dew point explains why the thermostat alone can't fix it.
  3. Condensation: anything below dew point gets wet — cold drinks sweat, windows fog, basement walls weep. RH never tells you the threshold; dew point IS the threshold.
